Editor's Comments

It is beyond obvious that something is different about Quadrangle. This is its inaugural issue as a web-based publication, replacing the printed version.

The decision to move Quadrangle to a web-based publication was made after much deliberation and was based upon several factors:

Technology: One of the biggest sea changes in the last decade has been the move from print to a digital information environment. Office computers, laptops and personal digital assistants provide access to information we want when it is convenient for us. An online version of Quadrangle is more compatible with how we disseminate and receive information and consistent with best practices for our industry;

Expediency: A web-based publication allows the College of Engineering to communicate to our alumni, donors, colleagues and friends in a more timely fashion and provide opportunities to immediately link you to related, on-line articles and publications. New or additional information can be quickly included;

Versatility: An on-line version gives us greater flexibility in terms of graphics, visuals and how much, or how little content an article requires. Additionally, online publications have the capability to better communicate, or enhance articles through the inclusion of video or audio;

Interaction: It allows you, the reader, to contribute to the discussion by commenting on articles, or replying to other readers' comments in real time;

Efficiency: The escalating cost of paper, ink, postage rates, etc. have made the previous version of the magazine increasingly expensive. In the current climate of budget cuts and economic difficulty, we must look for ways to be better stewards of our limited resources. The cost savings of an on-line publication versus a printed and mailed magazine can be redirected to more pressing priorities and programs. Plus, an online publication is more environmentally friendly.

Producing Quadrangle as a web-based publication will be an on-going learning process. We will continually look for ways to best serve you the reader and improve.
